Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
to Hold Korean Portraiture
Exhibition
From August 27 through November 29, the Asian Art Museum of San
Francisco will hold a special exhibition of historical and
contemporary Korean portraits under the title Likeness and Legacy in
Korean Portraiture. The first show in the US to be themed around
Joseon Dynasty portraits, the event is especially meaningful as many
of its paintings are being displayed overseas for the first time.
The exhibition will display unfinished and completed portraits of
esteemed subjects of Joseon-era King Yeongjo (who reigned from 1724 to
1776), alongside artwork inspired by traditional portraits by four
contemporary painters, including Yun Suknam and Suh Do Ho, offering
diverse perspectives on the time-honored genre of painting.
Since the establishment of its Korean gallery in 1989, the Asian Art
Museum of San Francisco has promoted Korean culture by regularly
staging Korea-related special exhibitions. The upcoming exhibition
will provide a rare opportunity to appreciate traditional Korean
portraits and learn about contemporary Korean art.
