Yoo Youngkuk was a Korean pioneer of abstract art. His primary subjects were mountains and seas painted in intense colors and geometric forms. This exhibition presents five pieces from Yoo’s Mountain series in chronological order, spanning a period from 1968 to 1974. Painting mountains tirelessly from the 1960s onward, Yoo earned the nickname “Mountain Painter.”

This exhibition sheds light on architect-designed homes from a sociocultural perspective, examining post-2000 contemporary Korean architecture and residential culture. The styles and meanings of residences are explored through the keywords “individuals,” “society,” “place,” and “time.” Fifty-eight houses designed by 30 architects and firms are featured. Although the homes on view may not necessarily represent the majority of housing and residential culture in Korea today, they have the power to inspire a more active approach to living.

Seoul 3024 offers an immersive viewing experience that reflects Daniel Arsham’s unique universe. Set in the year 3024, this exhibition features approximately 250 works, ranging from the artist’s earlier pieces to his latest creations. Arsham’s oeuvre covers a wide range of genres, from his Eroded Classical Sculpture series, modeled after sculptures from the Louvre collection, to works created in collaboration with the iconic pop culture franchise Pokémon. He also showcases his latest works, including paintings and drawings created in celebration of the Seoul show, and a large-scale recreation of an excavation site.

Under the theme “Seeing in the Dark,” the 2024 Busan Biennale is held at four venues across Busan and explores what might it mean to see in the dark. It is this predicament we find ourselves in, as navigating ground that is at once known and unknowable, a place that is terrifying, yet, our imperative is to imagine a beyond like never before. Instead of admonishing darkness, we see these depths as presenting an embracing alternative. The Busan Biennale is an international contemporary art show that was voluntarily organized by local artists in 1981.

Korean installation artist Do Ho Suh presents an exhibition in Seoul titled Speculations, which provides viewers an opportunity to experience the artist’s process of contemplating new possibilities. In the form of a retrospective, it showcases Suh’s continuous and interconnected creative endeavors, all inspired by the inquiry, “What if?” This exhibition features drawings, a video work titled Perfect Home: The Bridge Project, as well as screenings of Fallen Star and Do Ho Suh’s Moving Houses.

Gallery Hyundai presents Shared Destinies, a comprehensive overview of artist John Pai’s 70-year-long career. Starting with early steel sculptures inspired by Constructivism that the artist created in the early 1960s, the exhibition introduces some 40 works, such as welded steel sculptures, drawings, and paintings that represent each era of Pai’s oeuvre.

Kukje Gallery presents an exhibition by Michael Joo, who explores awareness and identity at the intersection of art and science and its boundaries. Joo focuses on exchanges, connections, and influential relations that are difficult to express through conventional language and perception. As conveyed in the title, the exhibition reveals hidden networks that lie beneath the surface, drawing attention to soft skills that mediate different invisible relationships and proximities.

This exhibition aims to explore new roles and possibilities for craft through experimentation in various genres. Twenty artists, including contemporary craftspeople, traditional artisans, architects, and designers, collaboratively investigate craft elements found in exterior and interior architectural spaces. Through the lens of sophisticated craftsmanship, they reimagine architectural fundamentals and concepts, from the foundations to the roof.

This solo exhibition by Korean-American artist Anicka Yi marks her first and most comprehensive museum presentation in Asia. Renowned for her experimental works bridging technology, organisms, and senses, Yi employs organic and ephemeral materials, such as bacteria, scents, and tempura-fried flowers, to delicately capture the nuances of human emotion and sensation. Featuring around 30 works created over the past decade, the exhibition is an introduction to Yi’s distinctive artistic world.

The Gwangju Biennale celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The 15th edition of the event, themed “Pansori: A Soundscape of the 21st Century,” brings together 72 artists from 30 countries. Seeking to map the complexity of the contemporary world, it presents an operatic exhibition exploring the spaces we inhabit, from our homes to humanity’s occupation of the planet.

In the historic village of Hahoe in Andong, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, villagers have performed the Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori (Mask Dance Drama of Hahoe) for more than 800 years. Byeolsingut is a ritual to pray to the village guardian deity for peace and abundant harvests. Traditionally, village communities performed mask dances and rites to seek health, happiness, and prosperity. The 2024 Andong International Mask Dance Festival offers the rare experience of seeing masks and mask dances from across the globe, gathered under the theme “Dance of Culture That Unites the World.”

The K-Royal Culture Festival is held at five historic palaces in Seoul — Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace, Changgyeong Palace, Deoksu Palace, and Gyeonghui Palace — as well as Jongmyo, the royal ancestral shrine in Jongno. It offers a range of events designed to enhance visitors’ understanding and experience of Korea’s royal culture. Highlights include the “Gyeongbok Palace Royal Court Banquet in Hanbok,” showcasing traditional Korean attire; the musical Peach Blossoms... Thinking of Them Saddens Me; and “Concert at the Palace – Ballet × Celestial Melody” at Changgyeong Palace.
