한국국제교류재단(KF)은 2025년, 대한민국 광복 80주년을 맞아 한글의 국제적 가치를 새롭게 조명하고, 이를 통해 한국과 세계 간의 소통과 교류의 가능성을 증진하기 위한 기획전 < 공명하는 문자 >를 3월 31일부터 9월 12일까지 KF XR 갤러리에서 개최한다. 이번 전시는 한글의 우수성을 강조하는 것에 그치지 않고 광복 이후 한글을 자유롭게 사용하게 된 역사를 넘어, 오늘날 세계인이 주목하는 한글의 글로벌한 가치를 탐구하고자 한다.

한글은 한국인의 정체성을 담은 문자이자, 창의성과 직관성이 돋보이는 독창적인 언어 체계로 세계 곳곳에서 연구되며 조명되고 있다. KF는 한글과 한국어, 한국 문학의 세계화를 위해 지속적인 지원을 펼쳐왔으며, 최근 한강 작가의 노벨문학상 수상에 기여한 번역가를 후원하는 등 우리 글이 세계인의 공감을 이끌어내는 데 기여해왔다.

이번 전시는 한글이 단순한 한국인의 문자를 넘어 동시대 세계인이 공감하고 소통과 교류의 상징으로 공명하는 지점에 주목한다. 이를 위해 한글을 국제적 시선에서 고찰한 작품들을 선보인다. 더불어 디지털 환경 속에서 한글의 독창성과 보편성을 탐색하며, 문자와 언어의 본질적 역할인 소통이라는 개념을 중심으로 지난 80년간 한글이 형성해온 국제적 공감대와 미래지향적 비전을 시각적으로 제시하고자 한다.

주한우루과이대사관의 협력으로 전시되는 라 레콘키스타의 작품은 우루과이 작가들이 한글과 한국 민화의 아름다움을 자신들의 시각 언어와 결합하여 재해석한 작업으로, 시공의 경계를 초월하는 마법 같은 시간을 선사한다. 뉴욕한국문화원의 글로벌 공공미술 프로젝트 <한글벽〉에서 출발한 강익중 작가의 첫 번째 인터랙티브 미디어아트는, 디지털 기술과 결합한 한글이 어떻게 국경과 언어의 장벽을 넘어 세계인을 하나로 연결하고, 공감과 교류의 새로운 장을 열어가는지를 탐색한다. 국립한글박물관의 협력으로 전시되는 초대 문화부 장관 이어령의 광복 70주년 기념 영상은 디지털 시대의 한글이 나아갈 방향을 조망한다. 백남준문화재단의 협력으로 소개되는 백남준의 작품은 디지털 환경에서 언어가 어떻게 번역되고 변주되며 새로운 소통의 가능성을 여는지에 대한 통찰을 제공한다.

이 외에도, 한글을 국제적 관점에서 탐구하는 다양한 작업들이 소개된다. 정진열은 소리나는 대로 표기할 수 있는 표음문자 한글의 강점을 활용해 외국의 소리들을 입체적으로 담아내며 한글이 가진 폭넓은 표현 가능성을 강조한다. 김휘아의 VR 작품은 외국인 가족에게 한국어를 가르치며 새롭게 발견한 한글의 아름다움을 몰입형 환경에서 실감나게 체험할 기회를 제공한다.

아울러, 첨단 디지털 환경 속에서 한글과 전통적 조형관을 동시대적 시각으로 재해석한 작품들도 함께 선보인다. 민본은 어린 AI가 한글과 훈민정음을 배우는 가상의 상황을 구현한 작품을 통해, 최신 기술과 결합한 한글이 새로운 미학적 가능성을 확장해가는 과정을 탐구한다. 구본창은 고궁 단청의 섬세한 조형미를 현대적으로 변주한 역동적인 미디어아트를 선보이며, 한국 고유의 시각 언어가 동시대 예술과 접점을 이루는 방식과 한글 창제 당시의 조형관을 추측해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

전시의 영어 제목인 'Moving Letters'는 역동적인 한글의 조형적 특성을 반영하는 동시에, 우루과이 작가 및 세계인이 한국에 보내는 '마음을 움직이는 메시지'로서의 따뜻한 의미를 담고 있다. 대한민국 광복 80주년을 기념하는 이번 전시가, 공명하는 문자로서의 한글이 지닌 의미를 국제 교류적 관점에서 조명하며 한국과 세계가 더욱 깊이 연결되는 계기가 되기를 희망한다.

In 2025, marking the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan, the Korea Foundation (KF) hosts the special exhibition Moving Letters at the KF XR Gallery from March 31 to September 12. This exhibition aims to shed new light on the international significance of Hangeul and enhance pos- sibilities for communication and exchange between Korea and the world. Rather than simply highlighting the excellence of Hangeul or reflecting on the history of how it came to be used freely after Korea's liberation, Moving Letters seeks to explore the global value of Hangeul today as it garners attention worldwide.

Hangeul, as a script that embodies the Korean identity, is a unique linguistic system distinguished by its creativity and intuitiveness, studied and recognized across the globe. The KF has continuously supported the globalization of Hangeul, the Korean language, and Korean literature. It also sponsored translators who contributed to Han Kang's recent Nobel Prize in Literature, further fostering global recognition of Korean writing.

This exhibition highlights how Hangeul today is not merely a script for Koreans but resonates as a symbol of communication and exchange shared by people around the world. To this end, it presents works that examine Hangeul from an international perspective. Additionally, the ex- hibition delves into Hangeul's creativity and universality in the digital age, visually illustrating the global resonance and forward-looking vision that Hangeul has cultivated over the past 80 years, with a focus on communica- tion-the fundamental role of script and language.

Presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Uruguay to the Repub- lic of Korea, a work by La Reconquista reinterprets the beauty of Hangeul and minhwa (Korean folk paintings) through the visual language of Uru- guayan artists, creating a magical experience that transcends time and space. Kang Ik-Joong's first interactive media artwork, stemming from the Korean Cultural Center New York's global public art project The Hangeul Wall, explores how Hangeul, in combination with digital technology, can transcend borders and language barriers to connect people worldwide and open new avenues for empathy and exchange. A video by South Korea's first Minister of Culture, Lee O-young, commemorating the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese occupation, presented in collaboration with the National Hangeul Museum, offers insights into the future direction of Hangeul in the digital age. Introduced in collaboration with the Nam June Paik Cultural Foundation, Nam June Paik's work illumi- na how language is translated and transformed in a digital environment, opening up new possibilities for communication.

In addition, the exhibition features diverse works that explore Hangeul from international perspectives. Jin Jung utilizes the phonetic nature of Hangeul, which allows sounds to be transcribed as they are heard, to cap- ture foreign sounds in a multidimensional way, highlighting the script's vast expressive potential. Kim Hwia's virtual reality artwork offers an immersive experience of the newfound beauty of Hangeul, discovered while the artist taught Korean to her Dutch mother-in-law.

The exhibition also presents works that reinterpret Hangeul and tradi- tional perspectives on structural aesthetics within a contemporary digital context. Min Bon explores the expanding artistic possibilities of Hangeul when combined with advanced technology through a virtual scenario in which a young artificial intelligence (AI) learns Hangeul and the Hunmin- jeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People), the orig- inal script of the Korean language. Koo Bohnchang showcases a dynamic media artwork that modernizes the intricate beauty of dancheong-the decorative painting of Korean traditional palace architecture-providing an opportunity to examine how Korea's unique visual language intersects with contemporary art and offering insights into the structural principles behind the creation of Hangeul.

The exhibition's English title, Moving Letters, reflects the dynamic structural qualities of Hangeul while simultaneously conveying the moving messages that Uruguayan artists and people worldwide are sending to Korea. By commemorating the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation, this exhibition strives to illuminate the significance of Hangeul as a script that resonates across cultures from the perspective of international exchange, fostering deeper connections between Korea and the world.
