한국국제교류재단과 주한그리스대사관은 2022년 3월 25일부터 6월 3일까지 《영혼을 수놓은 초상-그리스의 의복》展을 KF갤러리와 VR 전시를 통해서 개최한다.

동 전시는 그리스 혁명(1821년) 200주년을 기념하기 위해 2021년 그리스 국립역사박물관이 반겔리스 키리스와 아나톨리 게오르기에프 에게 의뢰한 기념비적인 프로젝트에서 비롯된 전시이다. 두 작가들은 그리스 국립역사박물관에 소장 중인, 값을 매길 수 없는 보물들 중 특히 전통 의복에서 큰 영감을 받았다. 그리스 헬레니즘이 존재했던 여러 장소인 발칸 지역, 소아시아 등지의 의복들은 18, 19세기의 것으로 당대 저명한 인물들이 직접 입었던 옷이기도 하다. 키리스는 그리스 국립역사박물관으로부터 위탁 받은 보물급 의복을 현대인들에게 입혀 초상 사진을 찍고 게오르기에프는 그것을 금과 은 등의 금속, 견사, 면사를 사용한 자수로 재창조해 역사와 전통이 현대와 조우하는 귀중한 장면을 선사한다. 그들은 전통의 뿌리에 초점을 두되, 민속적 이미지와는 차별화되는 자유롭고 창의적이며 현대적인 방식을 사용하여 과거의 유물을 재창조했고 생동감 넘치는 입체감과 다양한 질감을 부여해 의복이라는 사물에 생명을 불어넣어 관람객들의 다양한 해석과 공감각적인 체험을 유도한다. 특히 3차원을 2차원 안에 담는 사진이라는 매체, 2차원에 3차원의 공간감을 부여하는 자수라는 예술 형식의 조합을 통해 탄생한 작품 속 인물이 바라보는 시선은, 보는 이들의 영혼 깊은 곳을 꿰뚫는 시공간을 초월한 영혼의 초상

그 자체라고 할 수 있다. 이들의 혁신적인 예술 작업은, 오랜 역사를 가진 그리스의 과거에 대한 현대적 고찰과 박물관 소장품에 관한 혁신적이고도 귀중한 관점을 동시에 제시한다. 관람객들은 현대적으로 재해석된 전통 복식 초상화 작품을 목격함으로써 전통과 문화, 역사에 관한 그리스인들의 애정과 존경심을 이해하고 시공간을 초월하는 성찰적이고 영적인 경험을 하게 될 것이다.

KF 글로벌센터는 한국에 다양한 세계 문화예술을 소개하고 세계 여러 나라와의 문화 교류 및 상호 신뢰 증진을 위해 다양한 문화 및 인적 교류 활동을 활발히 전개하고 있다. 동 전시 또한, 그리스 전통 문화와 현대 예술에 관한 폭넓은 이해의 기회를 제공하고 한국-그리스간의 한층 더 나아간 우호 증진에 기여하길 희망한다.

Raiment of the Soul

From March 25 to June 3, 2022, the Korea Foundation (KF) and the

Embassy of Greece in the Republic of Korea jointly present the exhibition Raiment of the Soul at the KF Gallery and online as a VR

exhibition.

This exhibition stemmed from a monumental project commissioned to artists Vangelis Kyris and Anatoli Georgiev by the National Historical Museum in Greece in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution in 1821. Among the priceless treasures in the museum's collection, the two artists were particularly inspired by the 18th- and 19th-century Greek garments from regions touched by Hellenism such as the Balkans and Asia Minor, some of which were worn by prominent figures of the time. Kyris took portraits of modern- day people dressed in the prized national treasures entrusted to him by the museum, and Georgiev embroidered the portraits with metal, silk, and cotton threads to create rare scenes in which history and tradition intersect with modernity. Placing focus on tradition yet unreservedly using contemporary creative methodologies, the artists imbue artifacts past with vitality, dimension, and textures to bring them to life, up to interpretation, and induce synesthetic experiences.

The mixed-media portraits meld photography, which captures the three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional surface, and embroidery, which endows two-dimensional planes with three- dimensional spatiality. The eyes s of the subjects reflect the souls of historical figures, allowing them to cross space and time to reach the hearts of the viewers. Greek people's pride and respect for their culture and history, and immerse themselves in a reflective and spiritual experience that transcends time and space.

The KF Global Center introduces world arts and culture to Korea and

actively pursues various cultural and personal exchanges to promote international understanding and trust. This exhibition also intends to provide a broader understanding of Greece's traditional culture and contemporary art, and further extend the friendship between Korea and Greece.
