Korean Studies Chair: Full-time Professorship


Recruitment for 2006-2007 Academic Year


The Korea Foundation (www.kf.or.kr) established the Korean Studies Chair at Sciences Po in 2005 with a view to enhancing knowledge of Korea in France and other countries. The Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po: www.sciences-po.fr) is one of the foremost academic institutions dedicated to the social sciences in Europe. This Chair is for Korean specialists holding doctoral degrees within the disciplines of economics/finance, international relations, political science, law, sociology or contemporary history.
The full-time professorship is for a period of one academic year (nine months), involving teaching at least three (3) regular Korean studies courses per academic year at undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate level (between 28 and 60 hours of teaching per semester of 14 weeks) in either English or French. The Chair Holder shall also supervise the Korea-related doctoral studies of a research assistant, who will be appointed to assist the Chair Holder in teaching activities and work toward facilitating her/his integration into Sciences Po academic circles and, where possible, into broader Korea-related activities in France.

The Foundation will directly provide the Chair Holder with a salary of 3,900 euros per month for nine months-plus subsidies for relocation (750 euros) ; housing costs (1,000 euros per month) ; purchase of books and other materials (75 euros per month) needed to prepare for teaching courses; travel insurance policy; and a return economy-class airfare (Seoul-Paris) for a spouse. Sciences Po shall provide a round-trip, economy-class airfare (Seoul-Paris) for the Chair Holder, as well as office space with all facilities in Paris, plus library access, etc.

The selected applicant will teach during the next academic year, i.e from early October 2006 up until mid-June 2007. The Asia Centre will monitor the Korea Foundation - Sciences Po Korean Studies Chair, which is Sciences Po's hub for its Asian activities.

Applications must include a letter of intent (including research or publications plan in France) complete curriculum vitae and a teaching proposal for the three (3) courses in English. These should be sent by e-mail to the Korea Foundation addressed to csjee@kf.or.kr by March 15, 2006. A Selection Committee will meet in April 2006. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview in Seoul.
