[Museum] Reopening of the Korean Galleries at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

  • Date Sep 01, 2009

The Korean Galleries at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) reopens on September 10.

After going through a major expansion in size (expanded to 413 square meters) the Korean Galleries at LACMA reopens on the first floor of its Hammer building on September 10. LACMA is not only the largest encyclopedic museum in the west of the United States but also has the single most largest Korean collection amongst foreign institutions.

The Korean Galleries at LACMA were renovated in 1999 with the Korea Foundation’s support, and temporarily closed in 2005 for the museum’s large-scale expansion project. This expansion was made possible by the support of Amore Pacific through the Foundation’s designated donation program.

The new and expanded Korean Galleries consist of five main exhibition spaces - "Women's Quarters and Literati Gallery", "Paintings Gallery", "Buddhism Gallery", "Rotating Loan Gallery", "Ceramics and Lacquer Gallery."  At the moment, LACMA is holding a contemporary Korean art exhibition titled, “Your Bright Future: 12 Artists from Korea,” for which twelve representative contemporary Korean artists are participating.
