[Invitation] Prof. Patrick A. Messerlin, Director of Groupe d’Economie Mondiale at Sciences Po, Paris

Prof. Patrick A. Messerlin, Professor of Economics and Director of Groupe d’Economie Mondiale (Group of International Economy) at Sciences Po, Paris, France, will visit Korea from October 4 to October 11, 2009 by invitation of the Korea Foundation.

Prof. Messerlin is a distinguished economist with expertise in international trade policy, particularly focusing on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and regional free trade agreements (FTAs). He was a professor of economics at University of Reims, University of Paris XII and University of Lille I in France from 1969 to 1990. In 1990, he became a professor of economics at Sciences Po, Paris and has been Director of Groupe d’Economie Mondiale at Sciences Po since 1998. He also worked for the World Trade Organization as a special adviser of Mike Moore, former WTO Director-General, in 2001-2002. He served as co-chair of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Task Force on ‘Trade for Development’ in 2003-2005. Currently, he is also Chairman of the European Center for International Political Economy (ECIPE) based in Brussels, Belgium and co-chair of the joint World Bank & UK Department for International Development Task Force on ‘Global Finance and Trade Architecture.’ Among his vast writings, the most recent are Measuring the Cost of Protection in Europe: European Commercial Policy in the 2000s (Peterson Institute for International Economics, 2001) and Europe after the No Votes (Institute of Economic Affairs, 2006).

Sciences Po, Paris is one of the most prominent institutions for advanced education in France, in particular for the elites in the field of politics and diplomacy. Since its establishment in 1872, it has produced many leaders of French society, including former French presidents, such as Jacques Chirac and François Mitterrand.

During his stay in Korea, Prof. Messerlin will visit relevant ministries and the institutions to share opinions on the primary issues on international trade the Republic of Korea currently faces, such as the conclusion of the Korea-EU Free Trade Agreement and the challenges and obstacles concerning the Doha Development Agenda (DDA). He will also lecture about the recent global financial crisis and its impacts on world trade system, as well as primary issues on international trade at the Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University (SNU) and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) in order to promote understanding of current issues on international trade and illuminate the challenges we are facing.

In addition, he will have opportunities to experience various aspects of Korea by visiting the DMZ and touring museums and historical sites in Seoul and Gyeongju city.
